Ah The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, what a masterpiece it was. Almost everyone who had an N64 will tell you it’s one of the best videogames ever made and it is perfect in every single way. But take off those rose-tinted glasses you’re wearing and step into the year 2020. Not even the Temple of Time can save you from these dated N64 graphics. While the gameplay is still solid, the graphics are not. Even with the updated 3DS version, the remake failed to deliver due to the low resolution of the Nintendo 3DS… until now.
Modder Henriko Magnifico has created a texture pack which upscales the old files into higher definition textures which makes everything look sharper and crisper. There are over 6000 textures in Ocarina of Time and a few hundred have been re-textured or upscaled to look better than the original. Honestly, it’s night and day when you compare the old textures vs the new.
Now bear in mind this mod is exclusive to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS version and is only available for Citra. I’m sure most of you don’t know what that is so I shall explain.
In a nutshell, Citra is an open-source emulator for the Nintendo 3DS which you can get for PC, Mac, Linux and Android. It enables you to play 3DS games (which you should own) on these devices. The benefit of using an emulator is that you can run 3DS games up to 4K resolution. The original output resolution for the 3DS was just 240p, so that is a massive jump in quality. Adding HD texture packs such as this only furthers the experience.
That’s not all, Henriko Magnifico has a lot more texture packs for other games such as Twilight Princess and Pikmin 2. You can check out his website here.
